God expects parents to train up their children. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It’s the responsibility of parents to train up their children in the way of the Lord. Children are precious gifts from God to parents. God expects parents to instruct and guide their children in the right direction.

God said of Abraham, “I know him that he would instruct his children in the way of the Lord” (Genesis 18:19). As a parent, you can’t afford to fail the Lord in the task of training up your children. Parental input is key. Don’t leave the training of your children completely to teachers, pastors, uncles, aunts, friends, classmates, social media, etc. Parents are to teach their children everything they need to know as they grow up.

Don’t let your children acquire wrong notions about things from peers, classmates, social media, or society. Parents must take the training of their children seriously. The best way to train or teach your children is by example. Be careful not to do things you’ve instructed your children not to do: otherwise, they won’t obey you.

God expects parents to discipline their children when they do wrong or disobey instructions (Proverbs 22:15). But don’t discipline for offences committed out of ignorance. The purpose of disciplining should be to correct, not punish.

Dear parent, there are consequences for failing to train your children in the way of the Lord. Train them up now while they’re young if you desire peace of mind in old age. If you fail to train them today, they’ll be a source of worry tomorrow. This write-up will lead us to a series of discussions on what to teach your children as they grow up. Watch out for them.
